Learning English from the 2015 Asian Cup
Hello my fellow bloggers! Today I would like to quote some vocabulary items from the following news of the 2015 Asian Cup to help you learn more about Sports Communication. Here's the link of the extract: http://www.afcasiancup.com/news/en/afc-asian-cup-australia-2015-the-story-so-far/9xjaad8ouj2m16cye8va4kpli
Example 1:
With the weight of an expectant nation on their shoulders, the pressure was well and truly on AFC Asian Cup 2015 hosts Australia to deliver…
the weight of: A burden of worry or responsibility
e.g. He carries the weight of the world to continue fighting.
expectant: Having or showing an excited feeling
e.g. The expectant crowd cheered when he scored a goal.
Example 2:
But the Socceroos rallied and almost inevitably it was the irrepressible Tim Cahill that came to his Australia’s rescue, extending his national team scoring record with a 33rd minute equaliser.
rally: Come together again to continue fighting after a defeat
e.g. The army rallied and finally they won the war.
equaliser: A goal that levels the score in a game
e.g. He became the best player of his team with an equaliser.
Example 3:
China keeper Wang Dalei played a pivotal role in China taking all three points against three-time champions Saudi Arabia...
a pivotal role: An important role
e.g. She played a pivotal role in winning the game.
Last but not least, I hope all of you will enjoy learning English and watching tournaments at the same time! :)
